Timeless Design
Author’s Guest Cottage
For this project, the client was taking a 1920s bungalow style home, which hadn’t been remodeled since the late 1960s, and wanted a more contemporary look to use for the 1,000 square foot home for corporate housing. A monochromatic color scheme was used throughout the project. Luckily, hardwood floors in perfect condition. Budget for this project was $30,000.
Dining room
I replaced the linoleum flooring in the bathroom with white and grey marble, and replaced carpeting in the kitchen with dark grey slate tile. Formica counter tops were replaced with white with grey quartz, and a farmhouse sink was added. To save the client construction costs, we kept the original cabinets but put on new door faces, new hardware and a fresh coat of white paint.
Custom art pieces selected were chosen by local Carthage, Missouri artists to enhance guests’ stay in Carthage, which is known for its artists including renowned Andy Thomas, Jerry Ellis, as well as some young budding artists beginning their careers. Replacing the blinds at the client’s request to run across both windows so that from the outside they would always be level, was a simple and fairly inexpensive update.
Furniture was selected to provide comfort as well as durability. Bathroom linens were monogrammed with the name of the guest cottage. The kitchen was supplied with everyday Wedgewood pottery, Oneida stainless and Calphalon pots and pans. Holiday decorations were purchased to provide a home-like appeal for Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
